Olaf Fønss
Olaf Holger Axel Fønss (born October 17, 1882 in Aarhus , Denmark , † November 3, 1949 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish silent film actor .
Life
Olaf Fønss came to Copenhagen in 1899 and made his theater debut there in 1903 at Dagmarteatret. In 1912 he ended his theater career and went to film. He worked for the Nordisk film company until 1915 and appeared in important Danish productions, such as the Gerhart Hauptmann film adaptation of Atlantis (1913, August Blom ) and the early anti-war film Die Waffen Down! ( Ned med vaabnene , 1914, Holger-Madsen ).
Fønss went to Berlin in 1916 , where he was cast by Otto Rippert with the leading role in his serial Homunculus . The following year, he turned back to Denmark and realized 1,919 anguish ( Samvittighedskvaler / Moderen ), a one-person film without intertitles . Under Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau , Fønss took on the lead role in The Walk into the Night (1920). He played in Germany until the end of his acting career , but got his last leading role in Joe May's Das Indian Tomb in 1921 .
In the early 1930s he made two films for the Danish Social Democrats . From 1933 to 1947 he was chairman of the Danish Actors' Association and acted as a film censor. He wrote 7 books about his experiences in film.
