The Old Third District Courthouse is today's visitor's center of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park in New Bedford in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It was originally built as the seat of a bank and later used as a courthouse, giving it its name that still exists today.
history
The building has two floors and is equipped with a facade of sandstone clad. A narrow ledge projects beyond the window and the main input of a with Granitbalustraden provided porch is surrounded. The roof line is marked by a gable . On the front is the inscription “THIRD DISTRICT COVRT OF BRISTOL” on the level of the second floor. The building stands diagonally across from the US Customhouse .
The structure was built in 1853 by the New Bedford Institute for Savings , but abandoned in the wake of the decline of whaling. Later users were the eponymous court , an antique shop and another bank until it was bought by the Waterfront Historic Preservation League (WHALE) in 1995 and handed over to the National Park Service . In 1971 it was entered in the National Register of Historic Places . It has been a Contributing Property to the New Bedford Historic District since 1966 .
