Old and in the Way (or Old & in the Way ) was an American bluegrass band , which by then Grateful Dead - band leader Jerry Garcia was established.
history
Old and in the Way was a side project by Garcia to get back to its bluegrass roots. The band was formed on March 2, 1973 and disbanded for the first time in April / May 1974 when Garcia dedicated himself to the Legion of Mary . In addition to Garcia, one of the founding members was David Grisman , who worked with him again and again until Garcia's death and had previously had success with the Even Dozen Jug Band . Peter Rowan was responsible for the guitar , who had previously played with Earth Opera and Seatrain , among others . Also from Seatrain came the later Grammy winner Richard Greene on the fiddle . The last founding member was John Kahn , who had previously played bass for Nick Gravenites , Fred McDowell , Michael Bloomfield and the band Brewer & Shipley . Greene left the band after three months and was replaced by bluegrass veteran Vassar Clements before the first recordings .
The band played mostly bluegrass classics and bluesgrass versions of other songs and performed frequently at the boarding house in San Francisco . This is also where the self-titled live debut album was created, released in 1975 and critically acclaimed.
Even after the official breakup, the band members occasionally played together and released two more albums called That High Lonesome Sound (1996) and Breakdown (1997), both of which included recordings from 1973.
It was not until 2002 that the band was officially re-founded by the still living members under the name Old and in the Gray . Herb Pedersen and Bryn Bright joined as new musicians. In this constellation, the fourth album Old and in the Gray was released.
Trivia
The name Old and in the Way is based on the song of the same name by Grisman.
