Oldham is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county Greater Manchester in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Oldham . Other significant places in the borough are Chadderton , Failsworth , Lees , Royton , Saddleworth and Shaw and Crompton .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Oldham and the Urban Districts Chadderton, Shaw and Crompton, Failsworth and Lees were merged. These local authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire . From Yorkshire the Urban District Saddleworth was added.
In 1986, Oldham became a de facto unitary authority when the central government dissolved Greater Manchester. Oldham remained part of Greater Manchester for ceremonial purposes , as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police, fire services and public transport.
