Olga Cicanci

Olga Cicanci (born April 20, 1940 in Cahul , Bessarabia , today Moldova , † February 7, 2013 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian neo-Graecist , historian and paleographer .

Life

Olga Cicanci, who was of Greek descent on her mother's side, graduated from the History Faculty of the University of Bucharest in 1962 . She was a researcher in the Department of World History of the Institute N. Iorga of the Romanian Academy (1962–1969) and in the Institute for Southeast European Studies of the Romanian Academy (1969–1996). In 1976 she received her doctorate there with a dissertation on the Greek trading companies in Transylvania in history. Since 1993 she was a lecturer, later professor of Greek palaeography and history at the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest and the Faculty of Archival Science at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza Police Academy in Bucharest . She was a founding member of the Romanian Society for Neo-Greek Studies and its chairman since 1998.

In 1981 she received the Nicolae Balcescu Prize of the Romanian Academy, and in 2001 the Knight's Cross of the Romanian Order of Merit for Culture .

Research priorities

In her dissertation, which was awarded by the Romanian Academy in 1981, she dealt with the fate of the Greek trading companies in the Transylvanian cities of Brașov and Sibiu between the 17th and 19th centuries. She has made significant contributions to research on Greek printing in Romania as well as to other topics of the Greek diaspora in Romania . To various Greek personalities who were in contact with Romania, such as Rigas Velestinlis , Daniil Philippidis (Δανιήλ Φιλιππίδης), Markos Porphyropoulos (Μάρκος Πορφυρόπουλος, fl. 17th century) and Chrysanthos 16–55 17 , she made important contributions. Edited and translated them beyond the Ιστορία της Ρουμουνίας (Romanian History) of Thessalers Daniil Philippidis and Ιστορία εκκλησιαστών τε και πολιτικών πραγμάτων (history of religious and political affairs) of Athanasios Komninos Ypsilanti (Αθανάσιος Κομνηνός Υψηλάντης, * 1711).
