Oliver Petræus Effersøe

Oliver Petræus Effersøe (born June 22, 1830 in Tórshavn , died January 7, 1897 ) was a Faroese teacher, newspaper editor and politician . As a member of parliament, he was a member of both the Danish Folketing and the Faroese Løgting .

Life

Oliver P. Effersøe was the son of the Icelandic immigrant Jón Guðmundsson Effersøe (1784–1866), who originally came from the island of Örfirisey in Kollafjörður near Reykjavík , and his wife Súsanna Ólavsdóttir (1797–1882), a daughter of the farmer á Heygumon Ó Heygumon Óli Tummassarson from Vestmanna .

At the suggestion of VU Hammershaimb , Oliver P. Effersøe was sent to study in Copenhagen in 1851 , where he completed his Philosophicum in 1852 and passed the first part of his law exam in 1856 . After that, however, he did not continue his studies because he felt more drawn to the teaching profession. He then worked as a private tutor at Højstrup manor on the Stevns peninsula .

In 1864 he then took part in the German-Danish War as a volunteer . On his 34th birthday he was wounded in the process and was taken prisoner of war by the Germans, which he spent in Glücksburg . After the end of the war he returned to the Faroe Islands.

In 1869 he was elected as a politician to the Danish Folketing for the first time and sat there until 1872. He was a member of the Løgtings from 1871 to 1889 and from 1891 to 1895.

Professionally he worked from 1871 to 1897 for more than 25 years as a teacher at the secondary school in Tórshavn. From 1881 to 1886 he was also a member of the Faroese school administration. As the chief editor of the Faroese official newspaper Dimmalætting he was active from 1881 to 1882 and from 1892 to 1893.

OP Effersøe was also one of the most zealous members of the Tórshavner Klub Havnar Klubbi , who campaigned for the construction of the clubhouse at Tinghúsvegur in 1882.

Oliver P. Effersøe married Margreta Djurhuus from Tórshavn at the age of 53. They had three children together.

Other known family members

Older brother of OP Effersøe was Gudmund Effersøe (1827-1916), the Sýslumaður of Suðuroy , (more precisely: Gudmund Christie Laurentius Isholm Effersøe). OP Effersøe's nephews were RC Effersøe and Oliver Effersøe .
