Olivia Anna Livki (* April 2, 1988 in Opole as Olivia Anna Schnitzler ), also known as LiVKi , is a German singer / songwriter, musician, arranger, film director and producer.

Life

Livki grew up in the Black Forest in southern Germany. Her mother, a Polish singer, and her father, a German electronics engineer, met in Jordan, where they were staying for professional reasons. When Olivia Livki was six years old, she moved to Germany with her mother. The family last settled in Villingen-Schwenningen . Livki graduated from high school at Hoptbühl in 2004 . After abandoning her directing studies, she moved to Berlin, where she completed her studies in film studies , English philology and general and comparative literature at the Free University of Berlin in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts . In 2018 she completed her master's degree in film studies and trained as a film and video cutter. Livki has been working as a musician since 2009 and founded the LIVV Music label, where she has been releasing her albums since 2011.

Career

As a child, Livki played the piano and took part in school performances. According to her own statements, her childhood influences included African American artists such as Aretha Franklin , John Lee Hooker and Dr Dre as well as the filmmakers Alfred Hitchcock , Billy Wilder , Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick . At the age of ten, Livki wrote, edited and directed her first 45th film The Heirs , a parody of film noir and Hitchcock classics. At 16, she made a short English-language documentary about Aldous Huxley's Brave New World , as well as the Holocaust short film Untitled , which is based on Janusz Korczak's ghetto diaries and which earned her participation in festivals and several awards. The film Origin of Species was also made during her studies in Berlin .

In 2009 Livki finished her third demo The Smiling Face of Progress and produced the two internet videos Girl vs. City (live performance) and hologram (stop-motion animation video). In June of the same year she played her first concerts in Berlin and New York City. In 2010, the sessions for their debut album, which devoured a large part of the budget, were mostly unsuccessful. In order to organize new financial resources, Livki took part in a music competition on Polish television. Your appearance triggered an Internet hype and lively media interest in Poland. Your 2009 videos have been viewed by over 300,000 people, and the YouTube video of your performance 180,000 times. In the demo TSFOP was thousands Internet users accessed .

In November 2011, the concept album The Name of This Girl Is was released . It was written, arranged and produced by Livki and mixed by American producers Patrick Dillett (Here Lies Love) and Ron Allaire. On the album artwork, which Livki conceived and designed herself, she worked with the Scottish comic artist Iain Sommerville. The album features three songs that were previously on the Internet as demos of The Smiling Face of Progress , which was never released , and two that were known to Polish TV viewers. The album was self-published, sold around 1,000 copies and received positive reviews from critics in Poland. Livki played as Lenny Kravitz's opener in Torwar, Warsaw. She also performed at the OFF Festival and 2011 Coke Live Music Festival .

In July 2012, Livki signed a license agreement with EMI . In autumn 2012, The Name of This Girl Is was released as a new edition with three more tracks and a single.

In 2014 she worked with producer Sterling Fox and released the single Dark Blonde Rises under her second stage name LiVKi , which was released on the New York indie label Silver Scream Records. In 2015 Livki's second album Strangelivv was released on her label LIVV, as well as in Poland as part of her contract with EMI (which had since been taken over by Warner Music).

In 2016 the EP I Am Carthago Pt.1 was released, again under the name LiVKi, the single Noke of which was featured on the Listen to Berlin compilation of the Berlin Music Commission.

At the end of 2019, the song Spectacular appeared within the Listen to Berlin compilation 2018/19 , the official release of which will follow as a single and video at the end of February 2020.

Often seen as a bass-playing singer, her music combines the unity of voice and electric bass (with few low tones and emphasis on distorted midrange and high tones, similar to the sound of electric guitar) with complex electronic beats and samples, orchestral arrangements, melodic pop songs , as well as elements of ethno-percussion and choirs that are composed of the reproduction of their own voice. She herself describes her genre as "Global (or Global Village) Voice'n'Bass". Their influences range from Afro-American ( Blues , Gospel / Spiritual, radio , hip-hop ), art rock , post-punk , alternative - Pop , to African , Indian , Indonesian and Arabic music.
