During her high school -time in the 2010s invited Olivia O'Brien on the streaming platform SoundCloud music high, mostly cover versions of songs by other artists. She managed to attract millions of listeners there and become a popular star of the site. Her breakthrough in the mainstream came in 2016 with her first commercial single, the song I Hate U, I Love U , which she recorded once with the musician Gnash and once under the title Hate U Love U as a solo single. Both versions were able to place themselves on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA ; the variant in a duet was also an international success, which was able to position itself in the top ten in addition to the singer's home country in several other countries, including Austria and the United Kingdom . Several more singles and EPs followed ; however, there were no further chart placements. On April 26, 2019, her debut album Was It Even Real? .

Musical style

Olivia O'Brien's mostly self-written songs can almost always be assigned to pop music and are designed for catchy refrains , whereby an indie or alternative touch is often conveyed through the use of distinctive guitar riffs . In terms of content, their titles often revolve around topics such as being injured, a lack of or rediscovered self-esteem or relationship problems. What is striking is her often blunt language, which even in sad songs does not shy away from strong expressions and explicit descriptions (for example, in Josslyn's chorus, she sings that her boyfriend's lover performed oral sex on him ).
