Olli Malmivaara (born March 13, 1982 in Kajaani ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active during his career for Jokerit Helsinki , SaiPa Lappeenranta , JYP Jyväskylä and Espoo Blues in the Liiga .

Career

Olli Malmivaara began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Jokerit Helsinki . With his A-Juniors he became national champion in the corresponding age group in the 1999/2000 season. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the fourth round as a total of 117 players by the Chicago Blackhawks , for which he however never played. Instead, he stayed with Jokerit and in the following years became a regular on the club's professional team in the local SM-liiga . In the 2001/02 season he was Finnish champion with Jokerit for the first time in his career . In addition to playing with Jokerit, the defender played a total of six games on loan for Kiekko-Vantaa in the second Finnish division, the Mestis, between 2000 and 2003 .

After Malmivaara had started the 2003/04 season at Jokerit, he moved to SaiPa Lappeenranta within the SM-liiga during the season . At SaiPa, he became an important part of the team in the following years and following the 2005/06 season , in which he scored twelve goals in a total of 62 games and gave nine assists, which for him was the season with the most scorer points of his professional career represented, he received a contract with the New Jersey Devils . For their farm team , the Lowell Devils , he played in the American Hockey League from 2006 to 2008 . He was also in the 2007/08 season in two games for the New Jersey Devils himself in the National Hockey League on the ice.

For the 2008/09 season Malmivaara returned to his Finnish homeland and signed a contract with SM-liiga participant JYP Jyväskylä , for whom he has played since then. With his new team, he immediately won the second championship title of his professional career. For JYP itself it was the first title win in the club's history. The Finnish international and U18 junior world champion from 2000 played a major role in this success. He received the Matti Keinonen trophy as the player with the best plus / minus balance of all players in the main round. In the play-offs he was also the player with the best plus / minus balance. He was also elected to the league's all-star team. From 2013 to 2015 Malmivaare was on the ice for Espoo Blues and acted as the team's assistant captain for two seasons . In October 2015 he moved to TPS Turku within the league before ending his career in October 2016.

International

For Finland , Malmivaara took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in 2000 , as well as the U20 World Junior Championships in 2001 and 2002 . In each of these three tournaments he won a medal with his teams; gold medal at U18 World Cup 2000, silver at U20 World Cup 2001 and bronze medal at U20 World Cup 2002. In 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011 he was in his country's squad for the Euro Hockey Tour .
