Olomouc language island

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Olomouc language island was a German language island within the Czech-speaking areas in Moravia . It included the city of Olomouc , its southern suburbs Greinergasse , Neugasse , Neustift and Powel , the two suburbs Paulowitz and Salzergut in the east and the villages of Gießhübel , Nebotein , Nedweis , Neretein , Nimlau and Schnobolin in the south and west of Olomouc. There were also larger German-speaking minorities in the predominantly Czech villages of Bleich , Chwalkowitz , Hatschein and Hodolein in the north and east of the city.

The German settlement of the area around Olomouc took place in the 13th century from the East Franconian- speaking area. At least in the village of Nebotein, Bavarian settlers may also have been involved. After the Second World War, which resulted in the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia , the Olomouc language island perished. The expelled Germans from Olomouc and the surrounding area have founded a home association in Nördlingen in Bavaria .
