In the 1956 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Melbourne on November 26, in the Royal Exhibition Building , the weight lifting in the middle heavyweight held for men.

It was won by the Soviet Russian Arkady Vorobyov in front of the American Dave Sheppard and the French Jean Debuf .

The athletes competed against each other in the so-called three-way battle. In addition to the usual disciplines of tearing and pushing, this also included pushing.
According to the competition regulations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the body weight of every medium heavyweight boxer had to be over 82.5 kg and no more than 90 kg.

A total of 15 athletes from the following 14 nations took part.

Result

During the competition, the winner Arkady Vorobyov set three records: With 462.5 kg (total) and 147.5 kg in pushing, he set two world records and with 177.5 kg in pushing, an Olympic record.
