Mohammed Rahnavardi

Mohammed Hassan Rahnavardi (born May 10, 1927 in Tabriz ) is a former Iranian weightlifter , dentist and politician.

Career

Hassan Rahnavardi started lifting weights as a teenager. His successful athletic career began at the 1949 World Championships in Scheveningen , when he won a middleweight medal at 340 kg in the Olympic three-way behind Khadr Sayed El Touni , Egypt and Peter George from the United States.

In the following years he took part in the world championships in 1950, 1951, 1954, 1955 and 1957 and won a bronze medal each in 1951 in Milan in light heavyweight and in 1955 in Munich in middle heavyweight . In 1957 he was even runner-up in the middle heavyweight division behind Arkady Vorobyov from the Soviet Union at the World Championships in Tehran .

In 1952 and 1956 Hassan Rahnavardi started at the Olympic Games. Both times he took the ungrateful 4th place. 1952 in Helsinki in light heavyweight and 1956 in Melbourne in middle heavyweight. In 1956 he had the misfortune that he lifted the same load as the French Jean Debuf with 425 kg in the Olympic three-way fight , but was a little heavier than this, with which Debuf won the bronze medal.

In July 1955, he represented the Iranian colors in a friendship battle against the United States that took place in Tehran. He came here in the middle heavyweight to 415 kg and was defeated by Dave Sheppard , who scored 422.5 kg.

His last international championship played Rahnavardi at the Asian Games in Tokyo in 1958 , where he won the middle heavyweight title with 432.5 kg in a superior style.

Hassan Rahnavardi completed a medical degree and practiced as a dental surgeon. Later he was also politically active, was a member of parliament , temporarily Deputy Minister of Health and Education, Governor of Yazd and Secretary General of the Iranian Olympic Committee for five years.
