The Pacific salmon ( Oncorhynchus ) are a species of the salmon fish family (Salmonidae) that is widespread in the Pacific region ( East Asia and western North America ). The name of the genus is derived from the Greek onkos (hook) and rhynchos (nose).

The species of the genus are either pure freshwater fish or migratory fish , which after their birth move into the sea in rivers and streams and spend one or more years there. To spawn, the migratory species move back to their native waters, but, unlike the members of the genus Salmo , die after spawning.

As edible fish, Pacific salmon are very important for the fishery and are exported canned or smoked. Some species have been naturalized in other parts of the world, the rainbow trout , the pink salmon , the ketal salmon and the silver salmon also in Europe.
