The silver salmon or Coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch ) is an anadromous fish belonging to the Pacific salmon genus .

features

The silver salmon grows up to 100 cm long and weighs up to 10 kg. Living in the sea, both sexes have comparable colors. They are silver-gray all over the body (only the belly is white) and have black spots on the back and the upper caudal fin. When the salmon enter freshwater rivers at spawning time, they change color. The sides become reddish, in males the belly too. In addition, the basic color changes from silver-gray to brown. Males also develop so-called spawning hooks .

distribution

The silver salmon is found on the Pacific coast of North America and North Asia. He also lives in the northern polar sea. During the spawning migration, the silver salmon can also be found in freshwater rivers that flow into the North Pacific. It was also introduced in northern France.

Way of life

Adult silver salmon live in the sea near the coast. After reaching sexual maturity, they rise to the rivers in which they were born. There they do their spawning business on gravelly ground by digging spawning pits. After spawning, the animals perish. The juvenile fish hatch accordingly in fresh water, where they spend another one to three years. Then they migrate into the sea, where they spend several more years before they return to the rivers as spawning animals.

use

Silver salmon are popular food fish . However, practically all wild stocks are overfished , which is why they have been bred in aquaculture for some time .
