Ondokuzmayıs ( Turkish for nineteenth May ) (old names Engiz and Ballıca ) is a district and its capital in the Turkish province of Samsun . Ondokuzmayis is located 33 km west of the provincial capital Samsun . The name recalls May 19, 1919, on which day Ataturk , coming from Istanbul, went ashore in neighboring Samsun. The date is considered to be the starting point of the Turkish Liberation War ; May 19th is a national holiday in Turkey .
