The Oneida Lake is a large fish-rich lake northeast of the city Syracuse in the US state of New York .

With an area of 199 km², the Oneida Lake is the largest body of water in the state of New York. The lake is at an altitude of 112  m .

Part of the Erie Canal runs through the lake. The lake is drained by the Oneida River , which in turn flows into the Oswego River , which eventually flows into Lake Ontario .

The name is derived from the Iroquois tribe of Oneida , who lived in this area. Although Oneida Lake is not counted among the so-called Finger Lakes , it is sometimes referred to as the "thumb".

The lake has an extension of 33 km in east-west direction and 8.7 km in north-south direction. Its average water depth is 6.4 m. Its shore length is 89 km.

Its shallow depth means that in summer its water temperatures are higher than those of the much deeper Finger Lakes , while in winter the lake freezes and has a thick ice cover. This enables leisure activities such as ice fishing and snowmobiling .

geology

Oneida Lake is a remnant of the glacial lake Iroquois , a large prehistoric lake that was formed when glaciers blocked the current drainage of the Great Lakes - the Saint Lawrence River .
