Only You is one of Vince Clarke written pop - ballad . He composed it during his time with Depeche Mode , but did not record it until 1982 with the duet Yazoo , which he founded with Alison Moyet . The song reached number two in the UK and also debuted in the American charts. In 1983/84 the version of the Flying Pickets reached number one in the charts in Great Britain and Germany.
A remix by Only You made it into the UK Top 40 again in 1999 and reached number 16 on the US “Billboard Hot Dance Music / Club Play Charts”. The music video for this version was produced with the aid of the Houdini 3D animation software .

According to Allmusic , Clarke's melody in this song has "a sweet, wistful quality, elegantly arranged by Clarke and producer EC Radcliffe in a way that combines different monophonic sounds to give the song more depth and melodic substance." "Perfect, deliberately simple performance of Clarke's gentle and romantic lyrics, soulful and at the same time dignified in the style of the 70s soul star Ann Peebles ."

Version of The Flying Pickets
An a cappella version of the Flying Pickets was even more successful than the original and at the end of 1983 was number one in the British charts for five weeks. It was the number one Christmas hit that year. This made Only You the UK's first a cappella chart topper and it was released in other countries the following year. The classification as a cappella is misleading, as synthesizers can be heard throughout . The Flying Pickets version rose to number one in the singles charts in Germany in 1984 and was also able to place itself in Canada.
Version of echo-echo
In 1984 the band Echo-Echo released the single Nur dein Clown, a German-language cover in the version of the Flying Pickets. The single reached number 27 on the German airplay charts in 1984 and on May 26, 1984 won the golden one in Dieter Thomas Heck's “ ZDF Hit Parade ”.
Version by Enrique Iglesias
Enrique Iglesias recorded a Spanish version of the song which appeared on his second studio album Vivir . The title was released as the second single from the album and rose to number one on the US Billboard chart Hot Latin Tracks on May 3, 1997 . The piece stayed at the top of these charts for ten weeks. Iglesias also recorded the song in English and released it on the album Bailamos Greatest Hits .
