Onsala Church from the 17th century

Onsala is a village ( Tatort ) in the northernmost part of the Swedish province of Halland County and the historical province of Halland . Together with Gottskär, it forms a separate administrative unit.

The place in the municipality of Kungsbacka is about ten kilometers from the city of Kungsbacka and 45 km from Gothenburg , on the Onsala peninsula , the largest peninsula in Sweden.

Together with Gottskär, Onsala is now a popular holiday destination and has its own medical station, post office and other more modern infrastructure buildings. Onsala is also home to the OSO ( Onsala Space Observatory ), which conducts research in the field of astronomy and radiology for Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg.

history

In the 19th century, Onsala was very popular for its summer homes. In 1966 Onsala had only 1,839 inhabitants, until today (as of 2015) the population has increased to over 12,000. The extension of the motorway from Gothenburg to Onsala was partly responsible for this increase.

Name origin

When the Vikings built a place of sacrifice on the site of today's Onsala kyrka (Onsala Church) in the first millennium , they named the village Odens Sal. Over time, the place name Onsala developed from this .
