Ontario (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ontario is a white wine variety newly bred in 1908 . It is a cross between the Winchell and Diamond grape varieties . It is an extremely complex breed in which genes from the wild grapes Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are present. The new breed was developed at Cornell University in Geneva (the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology and Viticulture , i.e. the grapevine breeding institute in New York State ).

Ontario is used as a table grape in the cool climates of the northern states of the United States and Canada . The juice of the berries is rarely processed into wine . Ontario was used due to its winter hardiness as well as its cultivation quality for the purpose of further development of new breeds ( Cayuga White via the parents' share Schuyler , Himrod ...)

Synonym: the breeding line number NY 95 or New York 95.
