List of grape varieties |
Himrod is a white wine variety bred in 1928 with seedless berries. It is a cross between the Ontario and Sultana grape varieties . It is a complex breed in which genes from the wild grapes Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are present. It is therefore one of the hybrid vines . AB Stout is given as the breeder . 56 seedlings were selected in 1935. Within this selection not only the Himrod grape variety was selected, but also the Interlaken, Romulus and Lakemont varieties. Himrod was opened for commercial cultivation in 1952. All four varieties were named after cities or hamlets in New York State.
The new breed was developed at Cornell University in Geneva (the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology and Viticulture , i.e. the grapevine breeding institute in New York State ). The university is located at the southern end of Cayuga Lake .
The grape variety is mostly used as a domestic grape or as a locally marketed table grape , where it benefits from the comparatively low proportion of acid . Smaller stocks are known in New York (→ Viticulture in New York ), Ohio (→ Viticulture in Ohio ), Arkansas (→ Viticulture in Arkansas ), Japan, India and Canada .
Synonym: the breeding line number NY 15310 or NEW YORK 15310, Himrod Seedless and Hymrod.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The medium-sized leaves are three to five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is closed in a V-shape. The leaf is serrated in two rows. The teeth are set medium-wide in comparison to the grape varieties.
- The conical to cylindrical grape is medium-sized (the weight of the approx. 15 cm long grape averages 200 grams) and berries. The elongated berries are medium-sized and greenish-yellow in color, which when fully ripe changes almost to an amber color. The berries have a slightly aromatic taste. Due to the medium-thick berry skin, the variety is well suited for transport and storage for several weeks.
The early growing grape variety ripens shortly before the Gutedel and is therefore very early within the white grape varieties, so that it can also mature in cool locations. The variety is sensitive to the anthracnose (especially in India). The variety has a better resistance to powdery mildew and downy mildew . The variety is also vigorous and high-yielding. The variety has good winter hardiness. Severe damage only occurs at temperatures below −10 ° C.
