Ophiocytium is an algae - genus from the class of yellow-green algae (Xanthophyceae).

description

The alga lives individually or in tree-shaped associations that are stuck with a stalk or float in the plankton . The cells are cylindrical to long tubular and then usually curved in a snake shape. Their diameter is 3 to 30 µm, their length can be over 1000 µm. Young cells have an elongated oval shape and contain only one nucleus . Older cells are very elongated and have many cell nuclei as well as wall-mounted, green-colored plastids . Reserve carbohydrates ( chrysolaminarin ) are deposited outside the plastids in the cytoplasm . There is often a sting at the cell ends. The cell wall consists of two unequal parts. One part is very long, the other is short and serves as a lid during propagation.

Reproduction

The asexual multiplication takes place by the formation of zoospores with unequal length flagella in the interior of the elongated cells. Aplanospores (uncultivated spores) are rarely formed . After opening the lid, the zoospores of some species attach themselves to the opening with a stalk and thus form tree-shaped colonies .

Sexual reproduction is unknown.

distribution

Ophiocytium lives in plankton or epiphytically on aquatic plants and thread algae in small standing water bodies or bog pools. Occasionally the genus is also found in eutrophicated waters. Ophiocytium maius often lives en masse in ferrous waters.
