The Zilizische Ragwurz ( Ophrys cilicica ) is a kind of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae). Synonyms are Ophrys kurdica D.Rückbr. & U. and Ophrys kurdistanica Renz .
Plant description
This perennial herbaceous plant has two spherical tubers as persistence organs and reaches heights of growth between 15 and 60 cm. There are two to five elongated, lanceolate leaves at the base of the stem, and one or two sheathed leaves can be seen further up the stem.
The loose inflorescence includes three to twelve flowers . The ovate-lanceolate sepals are colored green and often appear whitish, pink or red tinged. The middle is usually bent forward, while the sides point diagonally downwards. The linear-lanceolate and papillae hairy petals appear greenish to pink. The red to dark brown lip has a lighter edge. The cardboard-velvety middle lobe is broadly wedge-shaped and has a small appendage in front. Its sides are bent down so that it appears very narrow when viewed from above. The downwardly directed and short hairy side lobes have a hump at the base that is between one and two millimeters high. There is a green band on the inside. The whitish mark usually consists of four longitudinal stripes, each with one or two cross connections, and has a purple border.
Distribution and site conditions
This species of orchid is endemic to south and southeastern Anatolia . The distribution area extends from the province of Antalya in the west to the province of Siirt in the east.
You can find this species in light deciduous forests, bushes and on poor meadows with moderately dry to fresh, but always calcareous soils. The cilizian ragwort only occurs in the mountains at altitudes between 500 and 1400 m .
Systematics
The Cilizian Ragwurz forms hybrids with Ophrys reinholdii subsp. straussii (H. Fleischm. & Bornm.) E. Nelson .
