On the slightly sloping blue-green, often glaucous , 6 to 11 centimeters long and 3 to 5.5 centimeters in diameter shoot sections, there are clearly recognizable wide oval cusps. The cream-colored areoles turn gray with age and have dark, inconspicuous glochids 1.5 to 4 millimeters long . The five to 16 thorns are present on almost all areoles. They are more or less orange-brown, have a yellow tip and are 2 to 4.4 inches long. Three to seven main spines and three to eleven secondary spines are formed. The loose-fitting sheaths of the thorns are gray.
