Opuntia depressa is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet depressa means '(Latin depressus) depressed, low, flat'.

description

Opuntia depressa grows shrubby with prostrate to ascending twigs branching from the base and reaches heights of 40 to 120 centimeters. The green to yellowish-green, slightly purple-colored, downy-haired, obovate to circular shoot sections occasionally become elongated with age. They are 16 to 30 inches long and 11 to 20 inches wide. The glochids are yellow and 3 to 5 millimeters long. The one to four needle-like, upright, slightly twisted or bent back, stiff thorns are yellow to whitish and 0.5 to 4 centimeters long.

The pink to slightly purple flowers are 3.2 to 4 centimeters long. The spherical fruits are yellowish red to red. They are 2 to 2.5 inches long and 1.5 to 2.7 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia depressa is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Morelos , Oaxaca , Puebla and Tlaxcala at altitudes of 700 to 1600 meters.

The first description was in 1908 by Joseph Nelson Rose .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
