Opuntia pubescens is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet pubescens means 'downy, fine-haired'. Spanish common names are "Abrojo", "Chile de Perro" and "Tetencholete".

Opuntia pubescens grows shrubby with prostrate to ascending branches, is richly branched from the base and reaches heights of 10 to 80 centimeters. The light green, downy or sometimes bare, cylindrical to somewhat flattened, linear-elongated shoot sections are conspicuously humped and fall off easily. They are 10 to 25 inches long and 1 to 2.5 inches wide. Their yellowish glochids are 1 to 2 millimeters long. The one to seven spread, strongly roughened thorns are yellowish brown to gray and 0.5 to 3.5 centimeters long.

The bright yellow flowers are 3 to 5 centimeters long. The club-shaped to inverted conical green fruits have a reddish brown tinge. They are 2.2 to 3.5 inches long and reach 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia pubescens is common in central and southern Mexico , Guatemala , the Caribbean , Venezuela , Ecuador , Bolivia , Peru and Argentina up to altitudes of 2500 meters.

The first description by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer was published in 1837.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
