Opuntia pycnantha is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pycnantha means '(Latin pycnanthus) with densely packed flowers'.
description
Opuntia pycnantha grows shrubby and forms low mats. The finely downy, densely thorny, circular to short elongated shoot sections are 10 to 18 inches long and 8 to 13 inches wide. The large areoles are close together. They have yellow to red glochids up to 5 millimeters long . The seven to twelve unequal thorns are yellow to light reddish brown and 0.5 to 3 inches long.
The yellow flowers are tinged with reddish and have a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. The heavily thorny fruits are up to 4 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia pycnantha is distributed in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur up to an altitude of 50 meters.
The first description by John Merle Coulter was published in 1896.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
