Opuntia scheeri is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors theGerman trader and plant lover Frederick Scheer, who lives in Kew .
description
Opuntia scheeri grows as a shrub with branches sprawling over the ground, is branched from the base and reaches heights of growth of up to 1 meter. The blue-green elongated to circular shoot sections are 15 to 30 centimeters long. The round brown areoles are on raised humps. Their glochids are brownish yellow. The ten to twelve needle-like, yellow thorns are up to 1 centimeter long. They are surrounded by white or yellow hairs that sometimes completely cover the shoot surface.
The light yellow flowers turn salmon-colored with age. They reach a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. The spherical fruits are red and fleshy.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia scheeri is common in the Mexican states of Guanajuato , Querétaro and San Luis Potosí .
The first description by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1898.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data. The future development of the populations is unknown.
