Opuntia schickendantzii is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German chemist Friedrich Schickendantz (1837–1896).

description

Opuntia schickendantzii has a shrubby growth, is richly branched and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The gray-green, slightly humped, cylindrical to somewhat flattened shoot sections have a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters and have reddish leaf rudiments up to 2 millimeters long . The small areoles are white. The one or two awl thorns are 1 to 2 inches long.

The yellow flowers reach a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The fruits are green.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia schickendantzii is common in the Argentine provinces of Jujuy , Salta , Tucumán , Catamarca and La Rioja at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.

The first description by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1898.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The future development of the populations is unknown.
