Opuntia strigil is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet strigil is derived from (Latin striga) stripe, bristle.

Opuntia strigil has a low shrubbery, is spread out with sometimes a few ascending branches and reaches heights of growth of up to 1 meter. The green, slightly glaucous , circular to obovate shoot sections are 10 to 12.5 centimeters long, 8.5 to 10 centimeters wide and up to 1.2 centimeters thick. The protruding areoles are rather close together, the numerous, up to 6 millimeters long glochids are reddish ocher in color. The one to eight bristle-like, spread, straight or slightly curved spines lie on the surface of the shoot or are directed downwards. They are red to reddish brown with a lighter tip and 1.2 to 4 inches long.
The light lemon yellow flowers have a reddish base. They reach a length of 6 to 7 centimeters and the same diameter. The roughly spherical red fruits are fleshy and have a diameter of 1.2 to 1.9 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia strigil is common in the United States in the west and south of the state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Coahuila , Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas at altitudes of 900 to 1,350 meters.
The first description by George Engelmann was published in 1856.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
