Opuntia tomentosa is a species of the genus of Opuntia ( Opuntia ) in the family of cactus (Cactaceae). The specific epithet tomentosa means 'felty'. Spanish common names are "Nopal de San Gabriel" and "Nopal Chamacuerito".
description
The plants can reach a height of 5 meters. The plant body grows with oval, flat branches and thus acquires a branched, tree-like structure. These parts of the shoot are often called "leaves" or "ears". Older shoot members cork, giving the plant its tree-like appearance. The areoles , which are typical of cacti and are covered with yellow glochids , are formed on the individual shoot parts .
The flowers appear terminally on the sprouts and are yellow, orange or red. After successful pollination, egg-shaped fruits are formed. These are thornless and red; they can grow up to 5 cm long and 4 cm in diameter.
