The orange-gray hair-tuft spanner ( Eulithis pyropata , syn .: Lygris pyropata ), also known as the currant-hair tuft spanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae). The species name is derived from the Greek word πυρωπός with the meaning "with a fiery eye" and refers to the vivid coloration of the forewing upper side .

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 27 to 34 millimeters. The upper side of the forewing is dark gray in the basal region as well as in the midfield and bordered by whitish transverse lines, which are particularly strong at the front edge . An orange-brown transverse band stands out between the dark gray areas. There is also an orange-brown area on the front edge near the apex . The hem field is colored white-gray. The upper side of the hind wing is whitish and has a dark transverse line and a wide gray band.

Pre-imaginal stages

The egg has an oval shape, is initially pink-gray in color and turns dark shortly before the caterpillars hatch. The surface is honeycombed and covered with tiny grains. The micropyl rosette has nine to twelve rays.

Adult caterpillars are very slender, have a light greenish to brownish color and are sometimes lightly spotted on the flanks. The white side back lines are very narrow. A dark brown collar stands out on the first body segment.

The doll is initially dirty light green and shows a weak dark marbling and a dark green back line. The cremaster is elongated and provided with several spirally rolled up bristles. Shortly before the butterfly hatches, the wing sheaths turn dark brown.

Similar species

The honey-yellow hair-tuft spanner ( Eulithis mellinata ) and the brownish-yellow hair-tuft spanner ( Eulithis testata ) differ in the predominantly yellowish base color on the upper side of the forewings and the significantly less contrasting pattern .

Distribution and occurrence

Alpine currant, a food plant of caterpillars

The distribution area of Orange Gray Hair tufts tensioner extends from southern Finland eastward through the Baltic States and the North East of Poland to the Urals and on through Siberia as far as Japan , where he by the subspecies Eulithis pyropata elegans is represented. Older records from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg are known from Germany , the species is now considered lost.

The main habitat of the orange-gray hair-tufted moth are mixed, deciduous and damp forests as well as parks and gardens. It inhabits lowlands up to a height of 200 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The moths are univoltin and fly from June to September. At night they visit artificial light sources . In their typical resting position, the moths remain with their antennae parallel to the back next to their backs and the end of their abdomen curved upwards. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of currant species ( Ribes ), preferably black currant ( Ribes nigrum ) and Alpine currant ( Ribes alpinum ). The species overwinters as an egg.
