Live and act

Ordo Stenmel's childhood and youth, whose surname means “stone flour” in High German, are poorly documented. He is mentioned for the first time when matriculating in Rostock in 1491 . In 1503 he was introduced as vicar at the altar of the 11,000 virgins at Hamburg Cathedral . Stenmel returned to Rostock as a bachelor's degree in 1509 , where he received his master's degree in the winter semester of 1510/11. He returned to Hamburg and in 1515 took over the vicarie at the St. Georgs altar in the cathedral. Two years later he took over the altar of St. Vinventii as the second vicarie, and thus the second cathedral lecture. In 1521 he took over a pastor's position as main pastor at the Sankt Katharinenkirche, from which he resigned prematurely in 1524. He had his apartment in one of the “blue houses” that stood near the Katharinenkirche.

Since there are no known documents written by Stenmel himself, it is difficult to assess how he behaved at the beginning of the Reformation . The theologian Stephan Kempe noted that from 1521 on, Stenmel was the first to criticize the indulgence trade and the immorality of the clergy from the pulpit. He also preached the pure truth of the gospel. After great hostility, he had to resign from office. The historian Heinrich Reincke saw in Stenmel's resignation an impeachment as a reaction of the cathedral chapter, which was directed against the Lutheran movement. The historian Susanne Rau describes this assumption as "unlikely". The historian Rainer Postel counts Stenmel among the pre-Reformation church critics.

Stenmel criticized the church, but kept the vicarages until at least 1525. With the vicars of the Katharinenkirche he had a contract on the singing of the Marientids .
