Hurricane Karla and Hurricane Lotte moved over northern Central Europe on New Year's Eve 2006/07 and caused some damage.

meteorology

The storms were a series of marginal lows that were controlled by a mighty Iceland low Henriette as a center of action against Europe.

December 29th to 30th, the storm low Jessica brought strong winds on land over the North Sea (176 km / h on the Brocken , 107 km / h on Heligoland ).

As an Atlantic low of the Jutland type, the Karla low reached wind speeds of over 100 km / h (111 km / h on the Isle of Portland ) over southern England and northern France . On the night of 30 to 31 December 2006, moved with hurricane force of up to 150 km / h through northern Germany and southern Denmark . The top speed was measured at 176 km / h on the island of Hiddensee in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . According to calculations, Karla was over the North Sea - together with storm depression Britta at the end of October - the strongest storm this year.

The hurricane Lotte followed just one day later , also of the Jutland type, with a slightly weaker storm until January 2, but also reaching further south (156 km / h on Wendelstein ) and heavy rain (84.3 mm / 24 h on the Krunkelbachhütte , Baden-Württemberg).

The winter season 2006/07 brought a total of numerous intense, fast- moving lows, such as the hurricanes Yanqiu (October 26/27), Britta (October 30 / November 1) and storm Vera (December 8), and then the hurricane Franz ( January 11), Per (January 14) and then Kyrill (January 18/19), one of the worst storms in recent history.

consequences

The storm brought down trees in northern Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia ; traffic signs, traffic lights and construction site barriers were also pulled down. Rail traffic was impaired in many places because of falling branches. A 180-ton ship was thrown ashore in Vordingborg . There were power outages in the northeastern Polish region of Mazury .
