Ormocer

Ormocers (word creation from organically modified ceramics ) act as multifunctional protective layers on many materials. Furthermore, they are one in the dentistry for direct restorative therapy used class of materials . Ormocer was invented around 1998 at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research (ISC).

composition

Ormocers consist of three components - the organic and inorganic components as well as the polysiloxanes - whereby the mechanical, thermal and optical properties can be controlled with different admixtures of the three groups:

• The organic polymers influence the polarity , crosslinking capacity , hardness and optical behavior.
• The glasses and ceramic components (inorganic components) are responsible for thermal expansion as well as chemical and thermal stability.
• The polysiloxanes influence the elasticity , the interface properties and the processing.

• Antistatic layers
• Sensor layers (for gases and ions )
• Adhesive systems (e.g. for fiber optic cables )
• doped optical layers for photonics
• Powder and water paints
• for leather finishing
• Dielectrics for assembly and connection technology
• Passivation, insulation and encapsulation for the (micro) electronics
• Optical conductor structures as connections and switches for optoelectronics
• Substrates and layers for micromechanical applications
• Solid ion conductors (Li + / H +) for batteries , supercapacitors , fuel cells and electrochromic windows

Use in dentistry

Similar to dental composite materials, Ormocers are used as filling material and are anchored to the tooth via a dentin bonding system and enamel etching . With the previous dental Ormocers, further methacrylates were added to the pure Ormocer chemistry (in addition to initiators , stabilizers , pigments and inorganic fillers ) to improve processability and to adjust the viscosity of the matrix . Clinical studies have shown that the different filling materials have similar success rates.
