Orna Barbivai ( Hebrew אורנה ברביבאי; Born September 5, 1962 in Ramla , Central District , Israel ) is an Israeli politician of the Yesh Atid and a former officer . She is the first woman in the IDF to achieve the rank of major general .

biography

Orna Barbivai's family moved to Afula shortly after she was born , where she spent most of her childhood.

In 1981 she joined the IDF. from 1995 to 1997 she headed the IDF recruiting office in Beersheba . From 1997 to 1999 she managed several reserve divisions . From 2000 to 2003 she was the head of the personnel department at the headquarters of the Israeli army . From 2003 to 2005 she was an orderly officer of the Israeli Central Command . From 2006 to 2011 she held various positions in the personnel management of the Israeli army.

Barbivai gained at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev the Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and at the University of Haifa the Master of Business Administration .

In May 2011, Barbivai was the first Israeli woman to be promoted to major general and appointed head of the personnel department of the Israeli army.

In September 2014, Barbivai retired. She was then appointed chairman of the fundraising division of the Women's International Zionist Organization .

She has been a member of the Knesset since April 30, 2019.

criticism

In the course of her work for the personnel department of the Israeli army, Barbivai banned the wearing of light-colored nail polish and eye-catching jewelry , which has drawn criticism from young women officers. Zeev Lerer, who was the IDF's senior gender equality advisor from 2003 to 2009 , accused Barbivai of blocking many ideas and plans that contributed to gender equality in the military.

Private

Barbivai is married and has three children.
