The Green Star of Bethlehem ( Ornithogalum boucheanum (Kunth) Asch. ) Or Bouché Milchstern is a plant from the family of asparagus plants (Asparagaceae).

description

The green milk star is a perennial , herbaceous bulb plant that usually reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. The wings on the inside of the stamens under the anthers have a tooth. The tepals are pointed and leek green on the outside. The ovary is cone-shaped and as long as the style.

The flowering period extends from April to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 or 56.

Occurrence

The green milk star occurs in the Ukraine, the northern Balkans, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria. Its distribution area extends from Central Europe to the northern Caucasus. The species grows in sparse dry forests, in forest steppes and on fields. It was naturalized locally in Central Europe. There are large deposits in the Palatinate near Deidesheim under the vines, noticeable during the flowering in spring.

Taxonomy

Ornithogalum boucheanum (Kunth) Ash. also has the synonyms Ornithogalum nutans subsp. boucheanum (Kunth) K. Richt. or Honorius boucheanus (Kunth) Holub .

The green milk star is rarely used as an ornamental plant. He has been in culture since the early 19th century.
