In 1972 he became a research assistant in the field of psychology in the educational science department of the Lower Saxony University of Education - Dept. Lüneburg (since 1988 University of Lüneburg). In the same year, Ziegenspeck founded the Orientation Level working group , which for decades was entrusted with various accompanying scientific studies by the Federal- State Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture under his leadership .

In 1977 Jörg W. Ziegenspeck received his doctorate from the University of Bremen . His dissertation read: The Orientation Level: School Development Between Reform and Restoration . Three years later, on the basis of further scientific research, he completed his habilitation at the Kassel University of Applied Sciences - University of the State of Hesse. The teaching authorization granted to him related to the field of educational science (school pedagogy with special consideration of lower secondary level). From 1982 to 1996 he was professor of psychology at the University of Lüneburg, then switched to education as a professor. In his decades of work as a university lecturer, he focused on establishing and expanding international relationships at university level:

He initiated the Lüneburg partnerships with the universities in Prague (CZ), Ljubljana (SLO), Klagenfurt (A), Cáceres (E) and Kaliningrad (RUS). The fact that Ziegenspeck successfully defended two further dissertations (2001: Charles University in Prague / CZ and 2003: Baltic Federal Immanuel Kant University (RUS), on the one hand, proves the scientific dynamism that has always distinguished him, on the other hand, his efforts to intensify the international exchange of ideas 'on an equal footing' (Fischer / Lehmann 2007, p. 594 f).

He coined the term “modern experiential education”. His greatest achievement was the establishment of experiential education as a recognized sub-discipline of educational science in Germany. In 1990 he founded the Institut für Erlebnispädagogik e. V. and was responsible for 30 years as editor of the magazine for adventure education , which has been published since 1981.
