The Orpheus was a cruise ship of the Greek shipping company Royal Olympic Cruises , which was commissioned in 1952 as Munster for the British and Irish Steam Packet Company . The ship remained until 1999 under way and was 2,000 in Indian Alang scrapped.

history

The Munster was built under the construction number 1349 at Harland & Wolff in Belfast and was launched on March 25, 1947. After the takeover by the British and Irish Steam Packet Company on January 17, 1948, the ship was put into service on January 20 on the route from Fishguard to Cork . In April 1948 it switched to the route from Dublin to Liverpool .

On October 23, 1961, the Munster collided with the tanker Jakinda in the port of Liverpool and had to be repaired by its builder in Belfast. Otherwise the service life of the ship was without major incidents. In October 1967 it ended its service with the Irish Steam Packet Company and was offered for sale under the name Munster 1 .

In July 1968 the Munster 1 went to the Greek Epirotiki Lines and was converted into a cruise ship after being transferred to Piraeus . In 1968 the ship was named Theseus , but did not take up service until the following year as Orpheus in the Mediterranean .

In the winter months of 1969 and 1970, the Orpheus undertook cruises to Portugal , Spain and Morocco under the charter of the US travel company Ensign Cruises . From May 1970 to October 1971, the American provider Westours chartered the ship for trips from Seattle to Alaska . After returning to Piraeus in November 1971, the ship remained in the Mediterranean for the rest of its career.

After Epirotiki Lines was dissolved in 1995, Orpheus switched to the successor shipping company Royal Olympic Cruises in 1996, where she spent another three years of service. In 1999 the ship ended its active service after 51 years. In October 2000, the Orpheus was sold under the name Orpheu for scrapping in Alang, India, where it arrived on December 24, 2000.
