The Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya , officially abbreviated as OBC , is a Barcelona symphony orchestra founded in 1944 as the Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona , which also functions as the Catalan national orchestra .

prehistory

In 1944 the Generalitat de Catalunya supported the establishment of an Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona (Municipal Orchestra of Barcelona) under the Catalan composer and conductor Eduard Toldrà . From 1957 to 1962 the conductor and composer Ricard Lamote de Grignon was deputy director of this ensemble. This Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona soon achieved its goal and spread classical music, especially the Catalan composers, to a large audience and thus became the center of Barcelona’s musical life. The orchestra gave a series of symphonic concerts with international soloists. In 1962 Albert Ferrer took over the direction of the orchestra until he left in 1967. In 1967 he then placed this leadership role in the hands of Antoni Ros Marbà , who from then on continued the orchestra as Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona until 1978. This position was then held by Salvador Mas (1978–1981), again Ros i Marbà (1985–1986), Franz-Paul Decker (1986–1991) and Luis Antonio García Navarro (1991–1993).

In 1994 the orchestra was given its current name, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya . After a period without an explicitly designated director, Lawrence Foster (1996 to 2002), Ernest Martínez Izquierdo (2002 to 2006), Eiji Ōue (2006 to 2010) and Pablo Gonzales (2010 to 2014) held this position. In January 2014 it was decided that from 2015 the Japanese Kazushi Ono should take over this management function.

Since 1999 the orchestra has had its headquarters in the Auditori de Barcelona . In addition to the annual concert series there, the orchestra has been on international concert tours in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Korea, Japan, Romania and Puerto Rico, among others. In 2002 the orchestra made two major tours, one of Europe and the other of the United States.

It offered concerts and recordings by composers such as Manuel de Falla, Robert Gerhard, Xavier Montsalvatge, Manuel Blancafort, complete operatic recordings by Tosca (Puccini) and Otello and Falstaff (Verdi), all of which brought an international reputation. Under Salvador Mas , the orchestra gave a concert in 2007 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where Catalonia was the guest country. The orchestra gave world premieres by contemporary composers such as Xavier Montsalvatge . It has recorded various recordings for the labels Naxos, Decca and EMI.
