Orthotylus marginalis is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 5.8 to 6.9 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthotylus are predominantly green in color. Many are extremely similar and are therefore very difficult to determine based on external characteristics. The host plants of the respective individuals are therefore an important indicator. Orthotylus marginalis is densely pale hairy on the upper side of the body. The membrane of the hemielytres and the veins are green. The first antennae is brownish.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe without the southern Mediterranean and east to Siberia and Central Asia. It is widespread and common in Germany and Austria. It is the most common type of deciduous tree species in Central Europe.
Way of life
The bugs live on various deciduous trees, especially on narrow but also broad-leaved willows ( Salix ) such as purple willow ( Salix purpurea ) or ash willow ( Salix cinerea ). It is not as common to find them on other deciduous trees such as alder ( Alnus ), apples ( Malus ), ash ( Fraxinus ), linden ( Tilia ) and elm ( Ulmus ). They feed on zoophytophagus and also suckle on aphids , leaf fleas and spider mites , but are not dependent on the predatory diet. The adult bugs appear from early June to August. A generation develops every year.
