Oscularia is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name is derived from the Latin word osculum for 'small mouth'.
description
The species of the genus Oscularia grow as shrubs with a few upright, but mostly spread to prostrate branches. Their mostly shiny internodes are reddish brown. Its very light gray leaves are triangular, convex on their sides, thicker than wide and noticeably keeled. In some species the leaf margin and the keel are serrated.
The flowers appear in terminal cymes . Sometimes there are more cymes underneath, forming an impressive, compound inflorescence . In some species the flowers are arranged individually or in three-flowered groups. There are five sepals . The petals are white to deep pink. The filamentous staminodes are different in number. The ovary is surrounded by five nectaries , which are often so wide that they touch each other. The flowers are open day and night. They smell of almonds or hawthorn.
The five-compartment capsule fruits are funnel-shaped at their base. The flap wings are very wide and rectangular.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Oscularia is common in South Africa in the western districts of the Western Cape Province . The species usually grow in rocky places, often in crevices.
The first description of the genus by Gustav Schwantes was published in 1927. The type species is Oscularia deltoides . The genus Oscularia includes the following species:
