Life

Döbrich graduated from high school in Münster in 1933 and received special support from Leo Burgholz until he was accepted into the state art academy in Berlin. During his time in Berlin he worked under the directors Alexander Kanoldt and H. Zimbal in the Hasler, Tappert and Rössing studios. He completed his studies there in 1937. In the same year Döbrich had his first major successes with purchases of graphics by the State Cabinet of Copper Engravings in Berlin. Later purchases by the museum in Weißenfels, the Westphalian Art Association in Münster and by various collectors.

Funded by Otto Pankok . Member of the Free Artist Community Schanze in Münster . Döbrich's pictures were exhibited in Paris , Berlin , in 1935 and 1948 at Clasing in Münster, together with Hans Kranefeld and Ernst Hermanns Gruppe Junge Westen , in 1943 in Halle, in 1949 in Hamm in the Gustav Lübcke Museum and in the same year West German contemporary graphics in Soest Aldegrever Society. Further exhibitions in Soest in 1953 on the occasion of the first awarding of the Wilhelm Morgner Prize and in 1957. Exhibitions in Weissenfels, and in 1952 in Münster. 1954 German-Dutch art exhibition in Bentheim. Travels to Holland, Belgium, France, Italy and Greece.

He was friends with Conrad Felixmüller , Herbert von Arend , Ernst Bahn , Hans Pape , Theo Hölscher . In 1936 he passed his handicrafts exams and had been an art teacher and biology teacher since 1939. Döbrich was a soldier in Poland and Russia and returned from captivity with serious injuries. After returning home, Döbrich initially did odd jobs, from 1950 he was a teacher at the Dionysianum high school in Rheine and from 1952 until his death senior teacher at the Schillergymnasium in Münster .

OKD, as it was also called, initially painted realistic landscapes and interiors . The later pictures are mainly reduced in color and outlines, the perspective has been neglected. The techniques changed a lot during these years. In the landscapes, mood or subjective feelings were no longer reproduced, rather Döbrich proceeded structurally and aimed at a homogeneous image structure. His strength lay in the graphic area from the representational to the abstract.

The wide range of possibilities for expression also included works of “ degenerate art ” that are still available today , which, had they been discovered at the time, would have led to a work ban. It is not possible to assign it to a certain style of the century. There are echoes of cubism as well as the tendency towards the traditional landscape. And yet most of Oskar Kurt Döbrich's pictures have a characteristic signature through their formal calm.

After his death, works by Oskar Kurt Döbrich were shown in exhibitions in 1971 Schillergymnasium, 1977 Deutsche Bank, 1981 Stadtsparkasse and 2009 in the Kunstkontor, Münster. On February 1, 2010, the Münster City Museum received a large selection of his works, which were exhibited from May to September 2011. Four of his drawings from 1933 are now on permanent display in the "Kabinett Schanze" of the city museum. With these and other works, the artist dealt critically with National Socialism at the time.

In 2015 a well-attended solo exhibition took place from March to August. 120 of his works were shown in the Opherdicke house (Unna district) under the title “Life as a Great Migration”. Here his wide range of techniques and motifs was appreciated. A catalog for this exhibition was published by Verlag Kettler under ISBN 978-3-86206-468-7 .
