Oskar Pietsch

Oskar Wilhelm Pietsch (born January 10, 1918 in Berlin ; † November 28, 2012 there ) was a German film architect and painter. He worked as a production designer for UFA , DEFA and SFB . A research project by the Institute for Art and Visual History at the Humboldt University in Berlin counts Oskar Pietsch with Willy Schiller , Alfred Hirschmeier , Harry Leupold , Paul Lehmann and Hans Popp among the most important film scenographers at DEFA and its predecessor, UFA.

Live and act

Oskar Pietsch completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and attended both the arts and crafts school and the college of fine arts in Berlin. In film since 1937, his first notable activity was that of assistant architect at Gasparone with Marika Rökk . He then also worked as a decorative painter for several films by Carl Froelich and with Zarah Leander .

In 1945, Pietsch went into business for himself before joining DEFA in 1949. There he was initially employed as a trick specialist, for example at The Council of the Gods . Pietsch in Babelsberg, who lives in West Berlin, later designed film buildings, for example for the directors Kurt Maetzig , Slatan Dudow and Martin Hellberg .

Cut off from his place of work in 1961 when the Wall was built , Pietsch continued his work as a set designer for the Federal Republic of Germany's film and television. In 1966 Oskar Pietsch finished his creative work and became department head and / or first architect at the SFB. He stayed there until his retirement in 1983.

He left his artistic estate to the Potsdam Film Museum . This includes his set designs for the film "Mother Courage and Her Children" from 1955, directed by Wolfgang Staudte , which was never implemented due to Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel's veto .
