Oskar Julius Herbert Polano , also Oscar Polano (born October 31, 1873 in Hamburg , † July 23, 1934 in Obergrainau ) was a German gynecologist and university professor.

Life

Polano was the son of a Hamburg manufacturer. In the summer semester of 1893 he began to study medicine at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and became active in the Corps Rhenania Freiburg . After two semesters, he moved to the Hessian Ludwig University . There he also joined the Corps Starkenburgia . As an inactive , he went to the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität Strasbourg , the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . In Kiel he was awarded Dr. med. PhD . He completed his training with Robert von Olshausen in Berlin and August Martin in Greifswald. There he married the daughter of the anatomist Robert Bonnet . After temporarily working as an assistant in Giessen, he went to the gynecological clinic of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg as an assistant doctor . There he completed his habilitation in gynecology in 1904. As a lecturer and chief physician (1906) he received in 1909 there a professorship . He was in the field throughout the First World War . Returned to Würzburg after the war, in 1919 he was appointed by the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as a regular associate professor and head of the gynecological polyclinic.

He was particularly concerned with the biology of pregnancy and surgical gynecology. He conducted epidemiological studies on contraception .

For health reasons he took a leave of absence in May 1933 and retired in November of the same year: he wanted to spend it in Obergrainau. He died in July 1934 at the age of 61.
