The Oslo Gospel Choir is a gospel choir from Oslo , Norway, founded and directed in 1988 by Tore W. Aas .
music
The Oslo Gospel Choir (often OGC abbreviated) interprets contemporary gospel music , which is based on the American style, and the kind of Christian hymn Choral Music, in the German praise and worship , English Worship is called. Soloists are often used. The choir is usually accompanied by a band consisting of keyboard , electric guitar , electric bass and drums , plus instruments such as the Hammond organ and brass section .
Most of the pieces were written by the choir director Tore W. Aas, but traditional American gospel pieces are also part of the repertoire . The lyrics are mostly in English, but some albums have also been sung in Norwegian and even in Dutch and Latin.
It is the self-declared aim of the choir to proclaim and confess the Christian faith through gospel music in churches and concert halls.
Choir
The choir consists of around 30 young singers in the line-up of SATB ( soprano , alto , tenor , bass ) or SAB (soprano, alto , baritone - all men sing the high register). The members come from different Christian communities in Oslo.
In contrast to "black" US American choirs, the OGC's performance is quieter: the singers are dressed in black, do not wear colored robes, the choreography and the vocal performance are precisely rehearsed (but relaxed), less spontaneous and ecstatic.
Choir members like Hans Esben Gihle have enjoyed success in the Norwegian music scene beyond the productions of the Oslo Gospel Choir as soloists with a similar music or like Lars Fredriksen with pop music.
success
OGC mainly performs in Norway, but also travels regularly on tours through various European countries (especially Switzerland and Germany). After the choir had already toured Germany in 2003 and 2006, a tour of four German cities followed at the end of 2007.
Overall, the Oslo Gospel Choir is one of the most influential gospel choirs and Tore W. Aas is one of the most influential gospel composers in Europe, whose works are interpreted by many other choirs. There is also a great popular success in Norway, which has resulted in four gold albums and one double platinum there. He sang the Olympic song at the Winter Games in Lillehammer (Norway) in 1994 with the Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø . In February 2006 the choir recorded a live DVD and CD in the Stravinski Auditorium of Montreux (“This Is the Day - Live in Montreux”) . On November 20, 2008, a 2008/09 tour began on the occasion of the 20th anniversary, which took the OGC first to Austria, then to Switzerland (Winterthur and Montreux) and Germany. In the first 20 years of existence alone, over 1.5 million albums were sold.
OGC won the GMA Dove Award in the “Best International Gospel Album” category with the “Get together” CD .
