Osman Pascha (* 1785, 1792 or 1798; † 1860 or after 1876), also known as Patrona Osman Pascha , was an Ottoman naval officer , most recently in the rank of Vice Admiral ( Patrona ).

Live and act

Osman entered the sea service early, soon passed the lower grades in the Navy of Mehmed Ali of Egypt and took part in the Battle of Navarino in 1827 as a brig commander . Around 1830 he was given command of an Egyptian frigate and later entered Ottoman service . In 1839, when the Ottoman fleet commanded by Kapudan Pasha Ahmad Fawzi defected to the Egyptians, he was already Rear Admiral ( Riyale ); after the bombardment of St. Jean d'Acre (Akko), where he commanded a Turkish ship of the line in 1840 , he was promoted to Vice Admiral (Patrona).

In the autumn of 1853 Osman Pasha received the order for the expedition, which was supposed to ship a load of war material (and troops) to Batumi , but was attacked by the Russian admiral Nakhimov on November 30th near Sinope . His flotilla (including Egyptian warships) was destroyed, he himself was wounded (in the foot) and taken prisoner to Sevastopol and Odessa. The Peace of Paris (March 30, 1856) gave him freedom again and he became a member of the Admiralty Council.

progeny

Osman's son Ahmet (Ahmed) Bey was also a naval officer and ship's captain, Osman's grandson Osman Emin Ahmed (1858–1890) was Rear Admiral (Mirliva).
