Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa ( OBCT ) is a think tank and digital media platform based in Trento , Italy, which specializes in Southeastern Europe .

history

The main activities include reports on the social, cultural and political developments in the 6 EU member states, 7 EU accession candidates or potential accession candidates, as well as in the 5 states of the Eastern Partnership of the Balkan and Caucasus region . Through the international network of correspondents, made up of 50 journalists, researchers and activists, Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso publishes daily news, analyzes and multimedia reports from the region. The archive already contains more than 10,000 articles and over 130,000 unique visitors visit the website every month. The think tank also writes and produces research, books, and educational toolkits , and uses crowdsourcing , social media, and online debates to encourage audience participation. All content has a Creative Commons license. Founded in 2000 under the name “Osservatorio sui Balcani” (German: Observatorium Balkan ) as a forum for dialogue between civil society organizations, OBC is now pursuing the goal of transnational relations, the integration of the Southeastern European states into the European Union and the development of a Support European democracy.

OBC is a cross-media and multilingual news hub between NGOs (especially CSOs - Civil Society Organizations), journalists, students and researchers, politicians, business, migrants and the general public. The activities are a combination of online journalism, research, training, knowledge dissemination and policy advice.

The interests range from conflict transformation , the politics of remembrance and the active participation of citizens in European public policy, the enlargement of the European Union , the European Neighborhood Policy to international cooperation , local development, human rights and minority protection , as well as migration and asylum issues, gender and welfare ; from an international, bottom-up perspective.

As an autonomous project of the Peace Bells Foundation ( Italian: Fondazione Opera Campana dei Caduti ), also based in Rovereto , OBC is supported by the Trentino Forum for Peace and Human Rights ( Italian: Forum Trentino per la Pace e per i Diritti Umani ) and by the Autonomous Province Trento and the city of Rovereto financially supported. OBC has also entered into a long-term partnership with the European Parliament and has received project funding from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union, as well as from private foundations and other public and private organizations.

Journalist Tim Judah from The Economist magazine called OBC “Italy's top website for Balkan and Caucasus affairs”. Many of the articles, reports and documentaries on the OBC website have won national and international awards and in 2010 the media platform received the "Antonio Russo" Journalism Award for War Reporting / Internet Section.

OBC is a founding partner of the European Center for Press and Media Freedom in Leipzig and has set up the Online Resource Center on Media Freedom, a platform on which material on the subject of media freedom is collected and classified.

In September 2013, the website was targeted by a hacker because of an article on corruption in the oil trade in Azerbaijan .
