Ostrowskia magnifica is the only species from the genus Ostrowskia in the bellflower family(Campanulaceae). It is common in Central Asia. The generic name honors a Russian minister of the 19th century: Michail Nikolaevic Ostrowski (Ostrovskij) (1827–1901).

description

Ostrowskia magnifica is a perennial, herbaceous plant with tuberous roots, its leaves are in whorls . The large, stalked flowers are in terminal, pyramidal panicles . The calyx is usually seven-fold, but there are also flowers with five- to nine-fold calyxes. The crown is large, bowl-shaped or funnel-shaped and colored pale purple or white. It is usually occupied with seven, or five to nine corolla lobes, which are shorter than the corolla tube. The filaments of the mostly seven (or five to nine) stamens are broadened at the base. The anthers are three times as long as the stamens, at the tip they are prickly. The pollen grains are provided with six or seven folds. The ovary usually consists of seven (or five to nine) carpels.

The fruit is a capsule that opens laterally through several elongated slits located in the middle or below the tip. The seeds are winged narrow.

Occurrence

The species occurs in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
