Osvaldo Montes (bandoneonist)

Osvaldo "Marinero" Montes (born January 8, 1934 in Rosario ; † July 4, 2014 ) was an Argentine bandoneonist and tango musician .

Life

Montes, called "El Marinero", was a student of Egidio Presenti and later of Pedro Caifano and Antonio Ríos . He studied harmony with René Teseo and Alberto Coronato and, at an old age, took trumpet lessons at the Instituto del Teatro Colón for three years . As a professional musician he made his debut at the age of thirteen with the orchestra of Raúl Bianchi , of which he was a member for twelve years. In 1955 he came to Buenos Aires and became a member of the orchestra of Miguel Nijenson , two years later he began his career as a bandoneon soloist.

Over the next few years he played in the orchestras of Enrique Mario Francini , Armando Lacava , Miguel Caló , Ángel Domínguez and Enrique Alessio and appeared as accompanist for the singers Alberto Marino and Siro San Román . In 1962 he joined the orchestra of Leopoldo Federico , with whom he accompanied the singer Julio Sosa . After his death he undertook concert tours through North and South America and the Caribbean with the orchestras Horacio Salgáns and Mariano Mores . Between 1968 and 1971 he traveled with the Quinteto Buenos Aires through the Soviet Union, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and Brazil. With the orchestra of Atilio Stampone he performed in New York's Carnegie Hall .

He played in the Orquesta del Tango de Buenos Aires and formed a duo with guitarist Aníbal Arias , with whom he made twelve concert tours to Japan and recorded two albums. He also played recordings with the singers Julio Sosa , Néstor Fabián , Alberto Marino , Floreal Ruiz , Edmundo Rivero , Roberto Goyeneche , Nito Mores , Libertad Lamarque and Mercedes Simone and the ensembles of Atilio Stampone , Alfredo Gobbi , Miguel Caló , Mariano Mores , Pedro Laurenz and Horacio Salgán .
