Oswald von Nell Breuning Prize

The City of Trier's Oswald von Nell Breuning Prize has been awarded every two years since 2003 and is dedicated to the Jesuit priest and social scientist Oswald von Nell-Breuning (1890–1991). Nell-Breuning, born in Trier, was instrumental in the social encyclical Quadragesimo anno of Pope Pius XI in 1931 . involved and is regarded as the nestor of Catholic social teaching . In 1981 he received the honorary citizenship of his hometown.

According to the statute, the Oswald von Nell Breuning Prize serves as a reminder of the scholar's life's work and "at the same time as a content-related discussion of the passing on of his legacy". In this sense, social science work, the work of an organization or institution as well as exemplary social works or the life's work of a person are recognized. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros. The jury consists of the mayor of Trier , the chairmen of the city council groups with one vote, one representative each from the theological and social science faculties of the University of Trier and one representative from the Philosophical and Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main , at the Nell- Breuning had taught and researched for decades.

The award ceremony takes place in the doctoral hall of the Episcopal Seminary in Trier . In this hall Nell-Breuning and Karl Marx passed their Abitur exams.
